Art

Inspired the single most common phrase used between surfers worldwide, I’m working on a new series of prints with more of a typographical nature. These first two represent the most popular surf spots on the North Shore of Oahu, and the beaches of San Diego County. Plenty more coming soon.

Check out these prints in a variety of sizes.

I finished my first piece in weeks last night and although it’s not my favorite, and I struggled with it quite a bit, I decided to keep pushing through until I felt is was finished. Something I’ve found through years of doing both art and graphic design is that no matter how much I might not like a design, someone, somewhere will like it.

Back when I first started working as a graphic designer for a boutique studio, one of our practices was to create up to 3 rough designs for our client and let them choose which direction they wanted to head. More times than not they would pick the one design we disliked the most; it was uncanny. So it goes with my art. When I started working with acrylics, doing abstract pieces, the works I liked the least were usually the ones that people connected with the most.

And so it goes with this new piece—I like it, but I don’t love it. I hesitated about finishing it, but I made a decision that even if I wasn’t totally stoked on it, someone, maybe a woman in a coastal town in another country, would appreciate the glamour and airy, elegance I’ve mixed with my rough and sketchy style. At this stage, it’s more of an experiment to see if my instinct is correct, but if even one person buys a copy of this print, I’ll be stoked that someone loved it more than me.

This latest piece featuring Duke Kahanamoku, the father of surfing, started as a special request from artisan, blogger and friend, Brandi Hussey. Although living mainland now, Brandi is originally from Hawaii, and as she puts it, my work reminds her of home. I’d go as far as to say she’s a collector now, and even better, an evangelist of the work, which I appreciate way more than the actual sales. She’s a friend and I was stoked to work on this piece with her. Although the idea originate with Brandi, it will also be available purchase on the shop in 5×7, 8×10 and 11×14 sometime later this week.

If you have a special request, don’t hesitate to ask. I will collaborate with you to make your ideas and memories come to fruition.

As I mentioned before, friend and fellow Etsyan, Kelly Westover, came to me with a personal request to create a piece representation of a recent visit to Hearst Castle and the San Simeon coastline in Central California. Thankfully, she loves the piece, which is all I hope for when doing private work.

I dig it, but what do you think? I’m open to projects like this for anyone, so if you have a special event or memory you want me to put some of my flavor on, hit me up. Some quality photography and an open mind, and we can make art together. Also, even though the majority of my work is beach, surf and coastal oriented, I’m not limited to those themes for commissions. I work within your vision, so drop me an email: dc[at]daveconrey[dot]com.

This weeks piece is about, well, peace and the tranquility of just enjoying a good moment in life.  Sometimes the beauty of the moment isn’t being their by witnessing it happen. Some days, before paddling out on an epic surf day, I would pause and spend time watching the majestic beauty of mother nature tossing the sea upon rocks and sand. It’s hard to explain the feeling, but for a few short moments, I enjoyed the spectacle and the noise to a point of zen consciousness. This piece is about recognizing you don’t always need to charge in and do battle.

“The best way to repay a lovely moment is to enjoy it.” – Richard Bach
