Why do we struggle to take our own advice?
I'm not going to do this super-important thing, but you should!
Why is it so easy for us to see the gaps in what our peers are doing? We might even have the perfect solution to their problem, but if we also have that same problem, we resist making the necessary changes.
Is it fear of failure or making a wrong turn, or have we conditioned ourselves not to strive to be better?
I had a moment this weekend where I was lending some advice to another artist about what I thought their next steps could be to grow their following through advertising. However, that’s advice I’ve been meaning to implement myself, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.
My first instinct is to blame it on not wanting to waste money until I have a better product in place before I start advertising. “Why advertise if there’s nothing for consumers to buy yet?”
More likely, I’ve conditioned myself to immediately reject the idea of spending money on my business because I fear getting it wrong and throwing money away, which is a common concern for people, except it’s entirely wrong.
Sure, the goal of advertising is to eventually make a return on the investment, but with a service like Meta or Pinterest ads, the system needs time to figure out who they should be serving your ads to. The more you spend early on, the better chance of finding your ideal customer you can continually advertise to until they become your most loyal patron.
